Having very recently acquired Castle Technology, and therefore the rights to RISC OS itself, RISC OS Developments Ltd has made people sit up and take notice yet again – after last year doing the same when it announced itself to the world, with the news that it had successfully secured funding for a then unspecified RISC OS project.
If you were unable to attend the RISC OS London Show, during which the company’s Richard Brown gave one of the talks – and in so doing packed the room set aside for the theatre and all but emptied the main hall – then you might want to know a little more, and you may even have a question or two. In which case, why not pop along to the next RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL) meeting, at which Richard will be talking?
The main focus of the talk will obviously be that very recent and very exciting news – the acquisition of Castle and RISC OS – with an explanation of how it came about, and what the company plans for the operating system. However, the older project hasn’t been forgotten, and Richard will also discuss that – which he revealed at the London Show was to try to get a fully featured web browser onto the RISC OS platform, an objective for which the company has funds, but has yet to successfully find developers willing to take on the challenge.

The group meets in upstairs, in the restaurant of the venue, which serves a range of Indian and English dishes, as well as hot and cold drinks.
It is easily reached by public transport – it is between Borough and London Bridge tube stations, and only a short walk from either through well-lit streets with good CCTV coverage. Both tube stations themselves are only short hops from other mainline stations – London Bridge is two stops on the Jubilee Line from Waterloo, and Borough is twenty minutes from Euston and Kings Cross/St Pancras (southbound on the Bank branch of the Northern Line).

Another meeting date worth considering is 18th February, 2019, when the group’s guest speaker is none other than Chris Cox – one of the main public faces of Acorn back in the 1990s.
Chris became manager of the Computer Business Unit of Acorn RISC Technologies (ART) and was responsible for the launch of the StrongARM upgrade in 1996. He will be talking about and taking questions on his time at the company, its successes and failures – and, of course, the fateful final days of Acorn.
